To transform Cancer Alley into a place where sustainable industries and healthy communities can thrive will require much more work. RISE continues to play a key role by tackling other proposed production plants (and keeping an eye on Formosa Plastics, which plans to challenge the court ruling) while simultaneously working to support the development of solar farms in the area.
That said, the Formosa victory is definitely worth celebrating and, hopefully, a sign of better things to come. In fact, a month after the court ruling, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency finally acknowledged the environmental racism taking place in Cancer Alley and called on Louisiana’s regulators to analyze the cumulative impacts of polluting industries on local residents. “I was told when the governor approved this plan, it was a done deal, and there was nothing I could do about it,” Sharon said. “Well, look at me now. Look at it now.”
